Gavin Newsom, a leading Democratic figure, has indicated that he intends to decide on whether to seek the White House in 2028 once the 2026 congressional elections are over.
"Absolutely, it would be dishonest otherwise," Newsom commented when pressed about contemplating a campaign for president after the 2026 midterms. "I'd just be lying. And I won't do that."
The governor's time in office as California's leader ends in the start of 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. However, he emphasized that any choice is not imminent.
"The future will decide," he added.
Rising Profile as a Administration Opponent
Newsom has come to the forefront as a high-profile adversary of the current federal leadership, leveraging his digital presence and advocating for a ballot measure that would expand the party's House seats in response to Republican redistricting efforts. This move has drawn criticism from adversaries.
Clash on Transportation
Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, accused that the governor does not care about Californians in a weekend interview on Fox News. Duffy disclosed intentions to cut federal funds from California and threatened eliminating the state's ability to issue commercial driver's licenses.
"I intend to cut $160 million from the state," Duffy stated, after a recently reported tragic collision in the state involving an unauthorized trucker that caused fatalities and casualties.
The governor's team noted that the U.S. government had reauthorized the individual's authorization multiple times, which enabled him to receive a commercial driver's license under national regulations.
Duffy had previously announced he was withholding additional funds from the state for not enforcing language proficiency rules for CDL holders.
Pointed Reply from the Team
"Former D-list reality star, now Secretary of Transportation, continues to misunderstand federal law," Newsom's office retorted in a previous release countering Duffy's threats. "In the meantime, as opposed to this individual, we'll stick to the facts: California CDL holders had a fatal crash rate significantly lower than the countrywide rate. Texas – the sole state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Data speaks for itself. This administration is dishonest."
Polling Data and Political Future
A recent survey found that a majority of the party and almost half of voters said that Newsom ought to campaign for the White House in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, his approval ratings has increased to an average of about one-third from previous levels, while his negative ratings has dropped from an average of previous highs to current figures.
Some time ago, the governor commented while traveling several swing states that he had "no clue" about his plans for the next presidential election.
He noted his past difficulties, including being diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of five.
"The notion that a individual who got 960 on his SAT, who still struggles to read scripts, who was typically not at the front – that such a possibility is discussed is, by itself, remarkable," he commented. "Who the hell knows? I am eager to see who presents themselves in 2028 and who rises to the occasion. And that remains the key point for the American people."
