Former Treasury Secretary Summers Steps Down from OpenAI Board
Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is exiting the governing body at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a series of electronic messages between him and deceased financier the disgraced billionaire became public.
The economist commented in a statement that he was "thankful for the chance to have served, optimistic about the potential of the organization, and anticipate following their advancement".
The former Harvard president, who once led the Ivy League institution, declared on earlier this week that he would be scaling back from public commitments due to his association with Epstein.
Digital Correspondence
The freshly disclosed emails revealed that the official communicated with the financier until the eve of the financier's 2019 detention for accused human trafficking of minors.
In another announcement, the artificial intelligence company expressed it understood Summers' choice to resign.
"We appreciate his many contributions and the insight he brought to the governing body," OpenAI stated.
Congressional Action
This development follows after both chambers of the US legislature agreed on Tuesday to endorse a legislation that would mandate the federal prosecutors to disclose its files on Jeffrey Epstein.
The legislation will subsequently proceed to the office of President Trump for signature. Trump has indicated he intends to endorse the legislation, after modifying his view on the subject following pushback from his base.
Correspondence Findings
A group of Epstein-related emails disclosed by the legislative panel recently mentioned numerous well-known personalities in the Epstein's former circle, without indicating any legal wrongdoing by those people.
The emails showed that Summers and Epstein dined together frequently, with Epstein often seeking to link the official to prominent international personalities.
Individual Statement
After the correspondence were released with the general audience, he said he took "complete accountability for my ill-advised decision to continue corresponding with the financier".
He continued that he hoped "to restore confidence and fix bonds with the people nearest to me".
Career Background
The professor held leadership roles under party leaders; functioning as treasury secretary under the former president, and as head of the White House economic team under Barack Obama.
He led Harvard from the early 2000s and remains a faculty member there. When declaring his step-down from public duties earlier on Monday, he said he would continue his educational duties.
Other Impacts
Following his announcement on Monday, the Washington think tank, a liberal think tank in Washington where the professor was a senior fellow, announced that the economist was not connected with the institution.
He became part of the directorate of the AI company, which creates the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to replace its top executive the company leader.
