Out of Obscurity: Why Avril Coleridge-Taylor Merits to Be Heard

The composer Avril Coleridge-Taylor always bore the weight of her father’s heritage. Being the child of the celebrated composer Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, one of the prominent British composers of the 1900s, her reputation was cloaked in the lingering obscurity of bygone eras.

A World Premiere

In recent months, I contemplated these legacies as I prepared to produce the inaugural album of the composer’s 1936 piano concerto. Featuring intense musical themes, soulful lyricism, and valiant rhythms, her composition will offer audiences fascinating insight into how she – a wartime composer who entered the world in 1903 – imagined her existence as a artist with mixed heritage.

Legacy and Reality

But here’s the thing about legacies. It can take a while to adjust, to recognize outlines as they truly exist, to distinguish truth from misinterpretation, and I had been afraid to confront her history for a while.

I earnestly desired her to be her father’s daughter. Partially, this was true. The pastoral English palettes of her father’s impact can be heard in many of her works, such as From the Hills (1934) and Sussex Landscape (1940). However, one need only review the titles of her parent’s works to realize how he viewed himself as both a champion of UK romantic tradition as well as a advocate of the African diaspora.

It was here that Samuel and Avril seemed to diverge.

White America assessed the composer by the mastery of his art instead of the colour of his skin.

Family Background

During his studies at the prestigious music college, her father – the child of a parent from Sierra Leone and a British mother – began embracing his heritage. When the Black American writer the renowned Dunbar visited the UK in the late 19th century, the young musician eagerly sought him out. He adapted the poet’s African Romances to music and the next year adapted his verses for a musical work, Dream Lovers. Subsequently arrived the choral composition that made him famous: Hiawatha’s Wedding Feast.

Inspired by this American writer’s The Song of Hiawatha, this composition was an worldwide sensation, especially with African Americans who felt shared pride as white America assessed his work by the excellence of his compositions as opposed to the his race.

Principles and Actions

Success did not temper his activism. At the turn of the century, he attended the pioneering African conference in the UK where he met the prominent scholar this influential figure and witnessed a series of speeches, including on the oppression of the Black community there. He was an activist throughout his life. He kept connections with trailblazers for equality including the scholar and this leader, gave addresses on ending discrimination, and even talked about racial problems with the American leader while visiting to the presidential residence in the early 1900s. Regarding his compositions, reminisced Du Bois, “he made his mark so high as a musician that it cannot soon be forgotten.” He died in that year, in his thirties. Yet how might Samuel have thought of his daughter’s decision to be in the African nation in the 1950s?

Controversy and Apartheid

“Offspring of Renowned Musician expresses approval to apartheid system,” ran a headline in the community journal Jet magazine. The system “seems to me the appropriate course”, the composer stated Jet. When pushed to clarify, she backtracked: she did not support with the system “in principle” and it “should be allowed to work itself out, directed by benevolent residents of all races”. Were the composer more attuned to her family’s principles, or raised in Jim Crow America, she could have hesitated about this system. But life had sheltered her.

Background and Inexperience

“I hold a UK passport,” she stated, “and the officials failed to question me about my background.” Thus, with her “porcelain-white” complexion (as described), she moved alongside white society, supported by their praise for her late father. She gave a talk about her father’s music at the Cape Town university and conducted the broadcasting ensemble in that location, featuring the heroic third movement of her composition, titled: “In memory of my Father.” Even though a confident pianist personally, she did not perform as the lead performer in her concerto. Instead, she invariably directed as the conductor; and so the orchestra of the era played under her baton.

Avril hoped, in her own words, she “could introduce a change”. Yet in the mid-1950s, the situation collapsed. After authorities discovered her mixed background, she had to depart the country. Her British passport offered no defense, the UK representative advised her to leave or face arrest. She came home, deeply ashamed as the magnitude of her innocence dawned. “The lesson was a hard one,” she expressed. Increasing her humiliation was the release in 1955 of her unfortunate magazine feature, a year after her forced leaving from that nation.

A Common Narrative

As I sat with these memories, I felt a familiar story. The account of being British until it’s challenged – which recalls troops of color who defended the British throughout the second world war and survived only to be not given their earned rewards. Including those from Windrush,
