Shoaib Bashir Makes Unexpected Selection in English Test Series Team
The English team has opted for a 12-man squad just two days before the first Ashes Test, with the 22-year-old spinner earning a surprise spot.
Bashir's selection suggests that the tourists will wait until the day of the first Test to decide whether Perth Stadium conditions favor four seamers or the addition of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the selected group, showing there are no doubts about either pace bowler’s condition.
The other seamers round out the attack, with Carse most likely to be omitted if Bashir enters the final team.
Pitch Factors Favor Seamers
The England coach had been anticipated to opt for an pace-only lineup on a ground that has staged five past matches.
During these games, the majority of dismissals have fallen to pace bowling, with only 40 to spin.
Among these 40 wickets, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers together have just a handful.
At a venue renowned for its speed and carry, and whose curator, the pitch preparer, pledged that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a side loaded with fast bowlers remains the more likely choice.
Alternative Choices Weighed
There had been rumors that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the side to offer some slow bowling while also bolstering the lower order.
But the coach has chosen to keep faith with the young spinner, having stated previously that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the series.
In July, Lyon commented on the English spinner as “decent,” saying that “in my eyes, the experienced spinner is still the English top slow bowler.”
“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who lack experience in the past in these conditions,” Lyon said of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I’m not going to reveal my strategies so they perform and perform well out here.”
