Slot Insists He Is Secure and Retains Liverpool's Support After PSV Eindhoven Defeat
Arne Slot admitted that it's understandable for doubts to be raised about his position after a further heavy loss versus PSV Eindhoven.
Liverpool endured their ninth defeat in 12 matches, representing the team's poorest run since being relegated in 1953-54.
They were dominated by the Eredivisie champions on a punishing night at their home ground.
“I feel secure, I'm fine, I've received a lot of backing from above,” the coach commented.
“It would be great to change things and secure a win of course but when you're coaching a team and not doing well then it is normal that doubts arise.”
He noted, “I'm comfortable with my position. This isn't the initial instance I've found myself in a challenging situation but it's necessary that we turned it around.”
Discussions with Liverpool Hierarchy
Upon being questioned to elaborate on his dialogues with the Liverpool hierarchy, Slot revealed:
“There's regular dialogue. They are supportive for the squad and for me and we have those conversations but they don’t call me every single minute of the day to say they have faith in me.”
He added, “During our regular conversations we have I sense the belief. However I've not talked to them since this defeat so far so it remains to be seen.”
Recurring Issues and Squad Reaction
The manager highlighted recurring shortcomings from his Liverpool side in their Champions League defeat, namely missed opportunities and conceding too easily.
Meanwhile, midfielder Curtis Jones was more direct in his assessment of the team's situation.
“I don’t have the solutions. Honestly, I do not. I'm telling that to all,” Jones said.
“It’s just unacceptable. I don’t even need to wait to reflect. I'm beyond being angry internally. I’m at the point currently where I simply lack the vocabulary.”
He added, “It's difficult because I play for the team I support. I’m a fan, and I’ve seen Liverpool for years.”
“In a long, long time, I haven’t experienced a Reds side experiencing a phase of this nature with outcomes so bad.”
Jones concluded, “However we continue to wear the crest on our chest. And as long as it is gone, we will always battle.”
“Our aim is to help the side back to the top, demonstrate to all again what Liverpool stands for and why people call it the best team in the world.”
“But right now, things are bad and it needs to change.”
