The beloved crime series AC-12 is officially returning for its seventh season, announced by the BBC.
A brand new six-episode series created by Jed Mercurio starts production in Northern Ireland in the coming months, according to the production team.
Vicky McClure expressed excitement about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."
The last series concluded in recent years with a final episode that attracted over 17 million viewers. Speculation about a new season have been circulating ever since, but confirmation only arrived recently.
Fresh Obstacles for AC-12
Series seven begins with AC-12 no longer existing and renamed as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.
Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings continue working to tackle corruption within the police force.
The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case so far."
New Character and Complex Case
A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of misusing his authority to become a offender.
However, this investigation might serve as a intentional diversion from a larger danger still operating in the background, the teaser hinted.
Speaking about the renewal, the creator commented: "Everyone involved are deeply thankful to the dedicated viewers."
"We're privileged to have had countless followers track the ups and downs of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh season."
Mercurio continued: "Misconduct in this country was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my creativity."
Actor Responses
The Scottish actor called appearing in the series as "a job of a lifetime".
"Beyond the show's success but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call dear friends."
"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.
Vicky McClure remarked: "It goes without saying I'm very happy the show is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Compston and Adrian again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"
Adrian Dunbar noted: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, what a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."
"Pleased with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."
Series Legacy
The drama premiered in the early 2010s and became one of the most popular TV dramas of the past ten years, featuring notable actors such as Thandiwe Newton.
The BBC haven't revealed exactly the new season will hit screens.
The finale of series six brought the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "the mysterious H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no plans for additional seasons.
Nevertheless, the network confirmed on this week that a seventh series is now being produced.
