The Red Devils Poised to Secure Germany Striker Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
The Women's Super League club are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer away from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Signing for United
Schüller, who has six months left on her deal, has been a consistent goalscorer for both club and country. Having netted over 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 appearances for Germany. This signing is viewed as a major coup for the Women’s Super League side.
Her exit from Bayern has been anticipated after she appeared to be fighting back tears while thanking the German club’s supporters after a victory over Bayer Leverkusen recently.
It was reported in late December that the German women's top flight was losing one of its leading strikers. Per multiple sources, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
Reliable Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line
The experienced striker's signing should represent a major boost to the team's forward line. She has been remarkably reliable in front of goal in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven straight seasons, up to and including the most recent campaign, she reached at least a double-figures tally of league goals.
- She claimed the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Building Momentum at Carrington
Securing Schüller’s signature coincides with a period when the club seem to be building positive momentum.
Their recent performances feature qualifying for the European knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has seen further business:
- The signing of Swedish defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The new deal for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's extension, a club official commented: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her understanding of the game and technical ability allows her and the team to control and dictate play from central areas.”
Lundkvist, who has joined from a side from the NWSL, said: “You can feel how much the club have grown in the last few years, playing in one of the most competitive leagues in the world and now featuring in the top European competition.”
