This Dominik Diamond Personal Gaming of the Year List for This Year
Alright, what did you think of this year in your home? Did it seem entirely positive as people post on Facebook? Overflowing with A-grades for the kids and elaborate themed fancy dress birthday parties for the adults? Or perhaps it was a sea of disappointment with only sporadic enjoyable moments? Could any part be actually real, or have we all become seven-fingered AI slop beings with unrealistic dental work?
I've assembled everyone for a reflection, whether they wanted to or not, to reflect on the paramount thing in a calendar year: which releases we were obsessed with the most. Let's get started:
Release Oldest Daughter Played the Most
Just Dance 2024
"Is it impossible to pick just one?"
"You can't expect my personal ranking."
In the mobile realm, she's invested time in Cityscapes and "searching for adequate healthcare."
"Virtually?"
"In the actual world."
Title Second Son Played the Most
Overwatch
"I don’t play games on my phone." He was offended that I suggested it. Point taken.
Title Third Daughter Played the Most
Resident Evil Biohazard
She's attempting to get into theatre school, but when she wasn’t singing, she was tackling Resident Evil. She also elaborated in great detail about her achievements on The Sims, where the Shark has a thriving utopia with significantly better healthcare than her big sister has outside the game.
Title the Spouse Played the Most
Crash Bandicoot: It’s About Time
She started the year at sixty percent completion and ended it at 82%. She's in it for the long run not a sprint for her. Her phone game: something called Woodle, where you have to remove pins.
Title I Teased My Kids About My Kids for Still Playing
Minecraft
Whenever I see my adult son playing Minecraft, I set about him like a cross between a persistent critic. When he objects, I reply that I am behaving this way to build character so he can be a man and play games for mature audiences. It’s a very Scottish father/son relationship.
Most Impressive Gaming Family Member This Year
Eldest Daughter on Just Dance 2024
There was no contest for this one. She is a machine. Even better than I was at classic rhythm games in my prime.
Game I Played the Most
Marvel Snap
It was in a league of its own to the hours I spent on this remarkably well-crafted strategy wizard’s poker, with its ever-changing range of cards and game variations.
Game I Wish I Had Played Less
Marvel Snap
The downside about games that constantly evolve their range is you wake up one day and realise it is all just an attempt to suck you into fomo-fuelled microtransactions. So love turned to hate halfway through the year and it got uninstalled.
Game I Wish I Had Played More
Doom: The Dark Ages
Stunning reinvention of a legendary franchise. Engrossing atmosphere from the start. I wish I could dispatch my issues so effectively in real life.
Game I Wish I Had Played More (Cerebral Edition)
Blue Prince
I refuse to rush this gorgeous, distinctive game and I just was short on the focused attention to give it what it required earlier this year. With holiday guests over the festive period, I will be playing this in the wee small hours after evening drinks.
Title That Was a Lifesaver When I Needed It
Balatro
I know Balatro was 2024’s breakout game, but I was late to it. And it is remarkable. It just gets every single thing right. The core concept is a fantastic concept, but the abilities behind the different special cards are so imaginative it has become a game I could play constantly. Add in the charm of the card design, and this is an definite peak of gaming. I dream of being stuck in a elevator for hours just so I have an opportunity but play it.
Game I Got the Most Criticism For Criticising
Outer Worlds 2
I endured a bit of backlash when I wrote about how a glitch in another game ruined the experience for me, but that other title is still a gargantuan gaming achievement in terms of art, sound, acting – which I recognized even more after playing Outer Worlds 2. So thank you to the individual who took the time to contact me to say that my Outer Worlds 2 review was "poorly reasoned". I mention that as written, because I respect the passion, and she is obviously an excellent judge of character.
Game Everybody Loved That I Just Didn’t Get
Hollow Knight: Silksong
Alright. Give me a brutally difficult Metroidvania-esque thing and don’t tell me guidance on what I am supposed to be doing, except "explore". How delightful. I acknowledge that it has great art and is ideal if you are into challenging games, but I cannot think of a gaming experience I am less interested in in my mid-fifties. I was around back when all games were like this, and my patience is gone. It was fine when I was a kid, but so was many questionable things.
Biggest Gaming News of 2025
Toss-up between questionable alliances that sparked debate, and high launch costs. Both morally indefensible and concerning.
Games I Would Name My Children After, If I Was Ever Stupid Enough to Have More
Clair Obscur, Despelote and Bananza would all be unique names called from the garden at tea time.
Part of My Body That Aches Most From Gaming
Right Thumb Joint. Seriously. I don’t know if it’s because of video games or doomscrolling, but it aches like the mines of sulphur in the mornings now. I knew I should have got my thumbs looked after back in the day.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2026
Grand Theft Auto VI.
And it will come out in 2026, even if we have to make 2026 last until the cows come home.
Game I Am Looking Forward to the Most in 2036
The Witcher 4.
