Tuchel Desires Jude Bellingham's Passion Provided England's Star Sets Aside His Ego Outside.
A single omission did the trick. A second one and it would have started to look spiteful from the England manager, a coach who is extremely shrewd not to know that securing World Cup glory demands help from the talented midfielder, even if it is equally Bellingham's responsibility to fit into the game plans and team pecking order required with the national team now that he is back in Tuchel's welcoming fold.
Tuchel wants Bellingham's edge, his passion, but it is about using it in the right way. Skill is important but England have learned the hard way that there is a price to pay when fame dominates. Nevertheless, a message has been sent.
Bellingham was given food for thought after his omission of last month’s squad. He observed England qualify at the tournament without him. He saw Morgan Rogers perform brilliantly as a high-pressing No 10. He heard the coach talk about valuing the group’s energy and ethics. Inevitably, Bellingham has responded in top form, scoring crucial goals for Real Madrid versus their rivals and the Italian side. He had to be picked; another omission would have made his squad place in serious doubt.
The hope is that the manager will have a midfielder directed towards intimidating opponents instead of his own colleagues. After all, on a pure footballing level, there is no advantage to starting a conflict with one of the best players in the world. The best outcome is that Bellingham’s time on the sidelines has made him realize that playing for one's country is a precious, uncertain thing. The coach, for his part, can now offer support around the youngster after showing that he is unafraid to make big calls.
“There is no problem with him, there is no problem with the character,” the German commented. “Bellingham displays the edge. It takes a sharp mentality to succeed at the top that he reached. Everyone must support him and establish an environment which he can channel this edge in matches and for the objectives we are striving for as a team.”
The star dominated the spotlight at the team news conference for this month’s meaningless matches against one opponent and the other. Any other news? Indeed, what about another talent? This is a further gifted playmaker who needs love and guidance. Foden has been absent for the national team since March and has struggled to reach his best this year but the boss had to consider the player after his display in his club's victory versus the German side this week.
The issue, though, is the best way to deploy the multiple playmakers at the team's disposal. Morgan Rogers and Eberechi Eze merit inclusion and there will be a good argument to select another youngster once he is fit after a fitness issue. Is selecting several attacking midfielders to the World Cup be excessive? The previous manager never found the optimal mix at the European Championship. He made concessions by forcing Foden and Bellingham into the same XI, restricting the captain's influence in the process.
It is hard to see Tuchel doing similar if it hurts the attacking balance. There is room for one No 10, with quick attackers on the wings. Clear roles helps. He is in as a central attacker. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first occasion, is a central midfielder and the returning Adam Wharton will battle Elliot Anderson as a No 6. Additionally, there is no wide role for Foden, who must play central. Tuchel wants him close to the striker. “It does not make sense to ask Foden: ‘We want you on the pitch but no spot exists on your best position, could you fill in at left wing? Or the right wing?” he said. “He will play in the No 9-10ish position, through the center. I've long had this fantasy about him for years. I think it fits his style best.”
Tuchel agreed there are occasions when the player has appeared uncomfortable in an England shirt. “One senses almost like, ‘Does he like it?’ And someone of his caliber who has this childish joy to play football, then clearly an issue exists, be it the position, the environment, I don’t know.
“In my opinion he is also so used to representing his club in a certain structure, to have a clear task. I think he benefits a lot from clear instructions. What is my position? In which positions should I turn? When should I to push the tempo? Where do I have to defend?
Tuchel mentioned Bellingham making runs for easy finishes and Foden netting strikes from 18 yards. He added he has a longlist of 60 players. Morgan Gibbs-White, others, James Trafford and the midfielder have dropped out. A new face is recognized for his good displays for City at left-back. Interest abounds.
Leaving out of the striker means there is no like-for-like alternative for Kane in this squad. Fascinatingly, Tuchel suggested using the playmaker as a deep-lying striker against Serbia or Albania. Other options, the United forward, the midfielder and the winger are alternatives if he be absent. Since the place is booked, this is an opportunity for a little experimentation.
At the same time, it is additionally a moment to get Kane’s relationship with Bellingham going. It is remarkable that you have to go back to the latter setting up the captain to score in an international match versus the Scots in over a year ago to discover the sole instance in many appearances for the national team when the pair combined for a score. Tuchel will be aware that the two stars only passed to each other a single time during the team's ties with Denmark and Slovenia at the Euros. Their partnership is lacking.
“At this point at some point it becomes the duty of the individuals,” he said. He does not shy away to be blunt. There is still a sense of Bellingham being on trial. He cannot even be guaranteed to start against the upcoming opponents. Tuchel desires him onside but he will be monitoring him closely. Leave the ego at the door. Doing so could turn a very strong England team into an more effective one.
